Back to Some Basics on How Wiki Software Works

Although there is no "Sandbox," per se, there are methods for an editor to safely practice wikitext without all of the worries associated with editing in the "Media Center Master Reference Guide."

  1. For each edit in the "Media Center Master Reference Guide" there is an option available, at the bottom of the editing page to: "Save page," "Show preview," "Show changes," or "Cancel" the edit.
    • An editor using this method for practice needs to remember,
    • Edit/Practice, "Show preview" and "Cancel," to be safe.
    • Clicking the "Save page" button will result in changes to the "Media Center Master Reference Guide."
  2. Each editor is provided two (2) empty pages linked to his/her account.
    • These pages are formatted in the same manner as any of the other pages in the wiki.
    • Although these pages are internal links within the Wiki, itself,
    • They are not directly linked to the "Media Center Master Reference Guide" area of the Wiki.
    • They are safe areas in which an editor may practice markups in a wikitext environment (i.e., sandbox),
    • Before editing in the "Media Center Master Reference Guide" area of the Wiki.
    • Saving a page in these areas will only revise the user's account pages in the Wiki, itself, and will not affect the "Media Center Master Reference Guide."
  3. The first page is titled with the editor's chosen "user name,"
    • The page link can be found, after logging in,
    • At the top right of the "Main Page," in red text.(1)
    • This is a place where an editor may wish to put:
    A short autobiography/user profile,
    Meaningful quotes,
    State reasons for joining...
    "A sandbox"(2),
  4. The second page is titled, "my talk,"
    • The page link can be found after logging in,
    • Just to the right of the editor's "user name" page link, also in red text.
    • This is a place where an editor may wish to put:
    • Notes to self and other editors about past/future revisions,(3)
    • An area to communicate with other editors....

Warning

  • Do not, create a "Sandbox" page with names such as: sandbox, sandybox, sandboxy, sandboxie, MCM sandbox, my sandbox....
  • The idea of staying away from such names, as listed above, will remove a conflict of two (2) editors with the same name for one (1) page in the Wiki.
  • A good name for a "Sandbox" would be one with a distinctive name, such as: to combine your user name with sandbox (e.g., username.sandbox, username_sandbox, user name sandbox...)
red text(1)
Links with red text indicates the page is empty, links with blue text indicates the page contains material).
"A sandbox"(2)
Use care when choosing a page name for a sandbox. See "Warning" box above.
past/future revisions(3)
Each page in the Wiki has a "discussion" page linked to it. At the bottom of each edit page there is an area it briefly state why the edit was make. The "discussion" page should be used to elaborate on editing comments, looked at to find out why edits are undone, used by editors, and/or sysops to work out agreements.
